Painting memories…

While some places we have visited quickly fade from memory, our minds can tenaciously hold on to certain visual impressions of places, bringing them up again and again in vivid colour. Why do these memories remain, and what exactly is our mind holding onto? My work explores the bright highlights of specific memories overlying darker emotional undercurrents that may help explain why these memories have been held onto for years.

Christy Hayhoe is a painter living and working in Toronto. After growing up in South America as a child, moving to the UK as a young adult, and other extensive travels, she draws from the colours, textures, and images in her memories to create vivid paintings questioning the importance and accuracy of what we remember from the places we have been.
